Larcenies in local communities have been resolved recently through a cooperative investigation between Spring Lake / Ferrysburg and Fruitport Township Police Departments.

Gas station surveillance video images showed the same vehicle was involved in multiple gas “drive off” larcenies in the Spring Lake / Ferrysburg area in September, 2012. The images showed the involved vehicle was a white Pontiac Grand Am displaying a license plate reported stolen to Fruitport Township Police Department that same month.

Police reviewed prior incident reports of this nature and discovered multiple prior similar acts had been committed in Norton Shores in 2009. A vehicle with the same description - a white Pontiac Grand Am - was involved in the Norton Shores incidents. Police had information at that time indicating the offender had been using a stolen license plate. Through their 2009 investigation, Norton Shores Police Department was able to identify the offender who was subsequently charged for those larcenies.

Police researched information on the 2009 offender, now age 32. On 10/01/2012, police located a white Pontiac Grand Am in the driveway of the offender’s residence in Fruitport Township. Police were able to easily identify the vehicle as being the vehicle involved in the recent Spring Lake / Ferrysburg gas thefts because of unique damage and stickers on the vehicle.

Police obtained and executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence. Police recovered two stolen license plates – one of which was the stolen plate from Frutiport Township that had been used in the Spring Lake / Ferrysburg gas thefts. The other plate had been reported to Muskegon Township Police Department in September as being stolen.

Police will be seeking charges through both Muskegon County and Ottawa County. Police are continuing to investigate whether this same vehicle and stolen license plates were involved in additional criminal activity.

No further information is being released by police at this time about the investigation. The name of the offender is not being released at this time as charges have not yet been authorized.

All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
