Bank Fraud Backfires on Suspect

On September 28, 2012, Century Station deputies responded to the “BBVA Compass Bank” located at the 10900 block of Atlantic Avenue in Lynwood regarding a business disturbance call. A bank employee told the handling deputy that a customer came to the bank branch looking to file a report for a theft from his checking account in the amount of $3000.

The bank employee reviewed the customer’s transaction history. The account had recently been opened and $3000 had been withdrawn from the customer’s checking account at the BBVA Compass Bank in Temecula.

The bank employee contacted the branch in Temecula and their corporate security office. Copies of the customer’s identification and the signed withdrawal slip were compared, along with surveillance video still images.

All of the evidence clearly depicted the customer making the alleged theft of $3000 from his account at the Temecula bank branch. The customer signed a notarized affidavit stating he did not withdraw $3000 from his bank account.

Despite having been shown additional photos of him at the teller’s window in Temecula withdrawing $3000, the customer continued to deny making the transaction, stating he was at work during the time the alleged theft took place. The customer asked the deputy if the bank was going to credit his account the $3000 that was allegedly stolen.

The customer intended on getting his money back, closing his checking account, and suing the bank. The deputy arrested the suspect for forgery, burglary, and attempted grand theft.
