Potential Storm/Hurricane Sandy
It may be early to predict how Hurricane Sandy is going to affect our area but it is definitely not too early to be preparing for the eventuality. The storm is on track to arrive into our area early next week. Here are a few things that you can take care of over the next couple of days to be prepared.
1. Stock up on some gas.
a. If you have stored gas now is a good time to recycle it. Carefully transfer your stored gas into the gas tanks of your cars. Newer gas contains ethanol and really causes havoc on smaller engines (like generators!). Larger engines in our vehicles can tolerate the older much better.
b. Make sure your vehicles are topped off just before the storm.
2. Test fire those generators.
a. It is a good idea to make sure you have a spare spark plug and some oil on hand.
3. If you have a chainsaw make sure you have all the supplies necessary.
4. Stock up and test your supply of batteries and flashlights.
5. Check your emergency kits. Make sure you have plenty of water and emergency supplies.
6. Clean out the fridge. Now would be a good time to use up those leftovers so they don't go bad if you lose power.
7. Formulate a list of people that you know that might be "at risk".
a. Contact them now and try to encourage and assist them in preparing.
b. Discuss what their emergency plan is with them.
8. Think ahead about your upcoming schedules and start forming contingency plans if the storm hits.
9. Make sure you have car chargers for your cell phones. If this power is out you can still charge your cell phone from your car.
Additional Updates will be forthcoming as the storm nears New England.
