State of Emergency declared - Severe Weather Expected
October 27, 2012
At 1245 today Gov. Patrick declared a State of Emergency in expectations of the arrival of Hurricane Sandy. Be prepared and plan ahead as Hurricane Sandy continues to barrels north.
The Town is currently keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Sandy as the storm is expected to hit Boxborough Monday. Hurricane Sandy is a large storm and its effects will be felt over a long period of time.
Although the storm is currently expected to track west and south of Long Island, we cannot let our guard down. The track can change drastically, either for the good or bad. The best way to deal with this storm is to be prepared.
Residents should adhere to the three Ps of preparedness -- "plan, pack and pay attention." Everyone should have a plan. Shelters will be made available if necessary; however residents will be more comfortable with family and friends. Residents should pay attention to all news and updates; currently, the Town does not plan to open shelters but if that changes, information can be found on Boxborough’s Police and Fire websites.
In the event that areas of Acton and Boxborough experience prolonged power outages next week, the District has made arrangements for the High School to be open on those days from 6pm to 8:30pm where families can eat a hot meal, use the shower facilities, access the internet and charge their electronic equipment (i.e. cell phones and laptops).
If staying at home, residents should have a kit prepared; if evacuating, a go-bag should be packed. A list of what to pack can be found at FEMA, Ready.gov, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, and Red Cross websites.
You only have two days to prepare. Use common sense. Think about your family and where you are going to stay. Stay safe by staying informed and being prepared.
