Borough of Magnolia prepares for Hurricance Sandy
COMMUNITY ALERT FROM THE MAGNOLIA OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
October 27, 2012 – 6:00PM
Attention Magnolia Residents:
The Borough of Magnolia Office of Emergency Management reminds all residents to be prepared for the impending tropical storm which will include heavy wind and rain at potential hurricane levels. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for our area calling for tropical force winds and up to 5 to 10 inches of rain through Tuesday. Residents are advised to pay attention to local news and weather sources for up to date storm information and timing.
The Governor of NJ has declared a state of emergency.
Preparation is key to dealing with a storm of this magnitude. Here are some basic tips:
ITEMS FOR YOUR HOME:
Three days' supply of canned, non-perishable, ready-to-eat FOOD
• Three days' supply of WATER (a total of three gallons per family member)
• Battery-operated RADIO and extra batteries
• FLASHLIGHT and extra batteries
• One week's prescription MEDICATIONS
• FIRST AID KIT
• Personal TOILETRIES
• Non-electric CAN OPENER and UTENSILS
• SPECIAL NEEDS items:
o INFANT care items
o Items for ELDERLY family members
o Items for relatives with DISABILITIES
• CASH or TRAVELERS CHECKS
• Store important DOCUMENTS in a waterproof, safe location
• Please make sure your pet’s needs are available including food, water and medications.
IN CASE YOU NEED TO EVACUATE:
• Keep your vehicle's gas level at a minimum of half-a-tank.
• Every family member must carry CONTACT INFORMATION:
o All phone numbers at work, school, etc. for every family member
o The name and number of a relative who lives out-of-state, to call in case your family gets separated.
• Available crate or carrier and supplies for your pet.

Also, be sure to secure and store safely all outside decorations, furniture and any other items. Flying debris can be very dangerous. Also, the borough would like to encourage all residents to not park on the street if possible and utilize their driveways.
On Saturday morning, Mayor Cowling-Carson and Director of Public Safety - Councilman DePrince, as well as Public Works Director – Councilwoman Bonamassa met with the Borough Emergency Management Team for a readiness assessment. All residents should be assured that all of the Borough’s Police, Fire, Ambulance, Public Works and other resources are ready and set to respond to emergencies during the storm when the need arises. The administion and emergency management team is also in contact with county and state officials coordinating planning and resources.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO ALL WARNINGS AND NOTIFICATIONS IN THE MEDIA AND OTHER OUTLETS. If an emergency arises please call 9-1-1. If you have a non-emergency need for services call 856-783-4900.
Please look after your neighbors and family members who are elderly or disabled. If you know of a fellow resident who has a medical need that may need assistance during the storm please contact the Borough’s Office of Emergency Management Command Center at 856-783-5818 so they may be put on our medical watch list.
