A 22-year-old male subject from the Muskegon County area was arrested Tuesday night following a brief car chase involving a stolen vehicle.

The incident started just before 9:00 p.m. in the City of Muskegon when a vehicle was reported stolen from the parking lot of the Admiral gas station located at 531 E. Laketon. The vehicle had reportedly been left running, unlocked, and unoccupied in the parking lot while the person in charge of the vehicle had gone into gas station.

That vehicle, a blue 1992 GMC Jimmy, was spotted a short time later by an officer from the City of Muskegon in the area of Sherman and Getty. That officer observed the vehicle travelling without lights on as it failed to stop for a red light at the intersection. The officer followed the vehicle with lights and siren activated, but the driver refused to stop.

The vehicle turned onto southbound US-31, and officers from Fruitport Township Police Department took over while State Police units were positioning south of this location to assist in stopping the vehicle.

Fruitport Township officers were able to get the vehicle to slow momentarily, but the driver of the stolen vehicle then accelerated and struck one of the Fruitport Township police cruisers. The officers were able to get the vehicle stopped immediately after this collision, and the driver was taken into custody after briefly resisting the arresting officers.

There was minor damage to the victim’s vehicle and the police cruiser. There were no reported injuries to officers as a result of the incident. The suspect was transported from the scene to the hospital to be evaluated and was subsequently lodged at the Muskegon County Jail.

No further information about this incident, including the names of the involved parties, is being released by police at this time.
