The Mountain View Police Department announces Operation T.R.A.F.F.I.C. (Together Raising Awareness for Fewer Injuries & Collisions)
In our continuing efforts to “ensure a sense of safety on our roadways” the Mountain View Police Department is launching Operation T.R.A.F.F.I.C (Together Raising Awareness for Fewer Injuries & Collisions).
At its core, Operation T.R.A.F.F.I.C is a campaign stressing the concept that pedestrians, bicyclist, and drivers (including motorcyclists) all share the roadway and each has a role to play in making the roadways safer for each other. Operation T.R.A.F.F.I.C will focus on locations of greatest concern, such as schools and downtown, for high visibility and directed enforcement by patrol and traffic teams. MVPD routinely broadcasts our directed enforcement locations via social media channels. MVPD firmly believes that our children and youth are among the most precious segments of our community. To that end, Operation T.R.A.F.F.I.C will continue to partner with our local schools to educate youth through the classroom, assemblies, and handing out traffic safety materials during day to day contacts with children. We ask that parents continue to remind and teach their children important safety tips when walking or riding their bikes around town.
Traffic Safety Tips to Teach Children:
• Stop, Look, & Listen
• Not all cars may stop or yield when they are supposed to
• Safety and strength in numbers when going to/from school
• When biking, always wear a helmet and high visibility clothing
An additional component of Operation T.R.A.F.F.I.C. focuses MVPD’s continued partnership with the City of Mountain View Public Works Department to evaluate traffic calming measures, short and long-term physical changes to streets, and joint review of traffic accident data in order to make informed decisions as to priorities for improvements.
Common Causes of Collisions
Residents are reminded that some of the most common causes of traffic accidents are:
• Unsafe speed
• Inattention to driving
• Improper turns
• Violation of right-of-way rules
• Violation of stop signals and signs
• Driving on the wrong side of the road
• Cellular telephone use
• Bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the roadway
• Cars failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
• Pedestrians crossing the street outside of marked crosswalks
