Anne Arundel County DUI Enforcement... Checkpoint on Rt 198 Laurel Friday night..

DUI Enforcement

Chief of Police Larry W. Tolliver announced today that the Anne Arundel County Police Department will be conducting increased DUI enforcement operations beginning Friday, November 16, 2012.

The Police Department will be conducting a DUI a checkpoint in the western part of Anne Arundel County on Friday, November 16, 2012. The Department’s ninety-fifth checkpoint will be conducted along Laurel Fort Meade Road (MD Route 198) near Race Track Road and Brock Bridge Road in Laurel.

This enforcement effort supports the “Checkpoint Strike Force through the Zero Deaths” campaign along with support from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO).

To date in 2012, Anne Arundel County has experienced several fatal DUI-related crashes. This enforcement effort is to make an impact in the reduction of DUI-related crashes. The enforcement efforts will include a DUI checkpoint and saturation patrols.

Historically, DUI checkpoints and increased patrols have been an effective strategy for removing drunk or drugged drivers from the road. Checkpoints are also an effective prevention tool by increasing the perception of risk for detection and arrest. During previous checkpoints in Anne Arundel County, 402 arrests for DUI and 110 arrests for drug offenses have been made after making contact with the drivers of nearly 73,658 vehicles. Checkpoints are an element of an overall strategy of prevention, education and enforcement that emphasize a reduction in the number of alcohol-involved crashes along with the injuries and deaths they cause.

In addition to impaired driving, officers will be conducting enforcement focusing on speeding, aggressive and distracted driving. Citizens observing vehicles operated by impaired drivers or in a reckless manner are encouraged to contact the police department by calling 911 or the non-emergency number: at 410-222-8610. Please provide a description of the vehicle, tag number and direction of travel.
