At about 3:24 a.m. police responded to an apartment complex on the 800 block of Alice Ave. on a report of a suicidal male named Richard Johnson. Johnson was also armed with a shotgun and barricaded himself inside his apartment after battering his girlfriend. The female fled the apartment and called police. Police evacuated the surrounding area and attempted to get Johnson to surrender, but he refused. The Mountain View/ Los Altos Regional SWAT Team responded to the scene along with the Crisis Negotiation Team.
The Crisis Negotiation Team made contact via phone with Johnson and worked tirelessly on bringing this situation to a peaceful resolution. At about 10:23 a.m. the negotiators were successful and Johnson surrendered, and was taken into custody by the SWAT team.
Currently Johnson is in custody for battering his girlfriend, however more charges may be forthcoming as the investigation unfolds. The victim girlfriend is safe, and currently being interviewed by police.
