The Sixth Precinct has an important message for the community!

'Tis the Season to be Jolly, but it is also the Season to be wary of Burglars, Thieves, Purse-snatchers, and other Holiday Grinches. Nothing can dampen the Holiday Spirit quicker than becoming the victim of a crime. Unfortunately, criminals view this time of year a bit differently... for them, it is an opportunity to burglarize your home for cash, jewelry, holiday gifts, and other valuables.

Here are a few tips to help keep the Season Merry and Bright:

*Ensure doors and windows to your home are locked when leaving, even if only for a few minutes. And ALWAYS lock your car!!
*Keep gifts out of sight from the vantage point of a prowler, not only in the home but in your vehicles as well.
*Do not advertise your vacation on social websites, and plan for your absence by using light timers and holding the mail and newspaper.
*Consider leaving a TV or radio on when gone for a short while.
*Do not hide spare keys outside, instead give to a trusted neighbor.
*When disposing of gift boxes, especially electronics, cut or break down boxes to conceal former contents. Burglers look to see how generous Santa was by the garbage at the curb!

*When shopping at night, park in a well-lit area.
*Lock purchases in your vehicle away from view or in the trunk.
*Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Secure your purse under your arm, and use an interior jacket pocket for your wallet.
*Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Con-artists may try to distract your attention with the intent of stealing from you.
*Be aware and alert to your surroundings, especially in crowds.

Finally, we would like to remind you DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! Designate a sober driver before the evening begins, and when in doubt, call a cab to get you home safely!
