MVPD is pleased to announce the award of the 5th annual Steinwinder Award to Officer Terry Hoang for the most self-initiated DUI and drug influence arrests for 2012. Ofc. Hoang had sixty (60) of these arrests for the calendar year.
The award was named in honor of the late John Steinwinder, our primary phlebotomist and chemical sample collector for over fifty years. Just before his passing in 2008, John granted us permission to name the award in his honor.
John worked with several police agencies in our area collecting chemical samples for DUI cases, narcotic influence arrests, and other critical incidents on a 24-hour on-call basis. It was a very rare occasion when John could not respond to our call within 10-minutes from his home just around the corner on Shoreline Blvd. He collected more than 50,000 chemical samples during his years of service and with each collection came John’s experience, invaluable knowledge, and humor.
This past holiday season, the Mountain View Police Department had 55 DUI arrests and two DUI warrant arrests during the Avoid the 13 Holiday DUI Campaign (a 61% increase from last year). There were two DUI related injury accidents and no DUI related fatalities during the campaign this year.
MVPD recognizes that arresting DUI drivers is no more important during the Avoid the 13 campaign than it is throughout the year. However, Avoid the 13 offers us the unique opportunity to collaborate with the county-wide Avoid campaign to publicize just how dangerous drunk driving can be.
The Mountain View Police Department believes our anti-DUI and anti-drug efforts contribute to our focusing goal and strategic vision of Setting the Standard for Police Professionalism by ensuring a sense of safety on our roadways and in our community.
