Synopsis:

On February 19, 2013, at approximately 2:17 p.m., officers from the Northern District responded to a motor vehicle crash involving multiple vehicles on Ritchie Highway and Furnace Branch Road in Glen Burnie. Officers determined that two vehicles collided in the southbound lanes of Ritchie Highway.

The investigation revealed that a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling southbound on Ritchie Highway approaching the traffic signal at Furnace Branch Road. Southbound traffic was stopped at the intersection for a steady red signal. The Dodge Caravan had a green arrow and was making the left turn onto Furnace Branch Road. According to witnesses, the Dodge Ram pulled into a right turn only lane, entered the intersection against the light traveling straight and was impacted by the Caravan.

Consequently, the Dodge Ram rotated slightly and struck a light support pole with the passenger door. The Dodge Ram passenger was partially trapped in the vehicle and was extricated by paramedics and taken for treatment. The passenger is currently is critical condition at University of Maryland Shock Trauma. All other parties involved in the crash were checked out at the scene and refused medical treatment. Preliminary information indicates driver error on the part of the operator of the Dodge Ram as a contributing factor in the crash. Anyone with further information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.
