Myth vs. Fact: Reporting Someone Missing

In an on-going effort to serve the community in the most professional and responsive manner possible, the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station has initiated a social media based community outreach program entitled “Myth vs. Fact: The Law and You.”

The purpose of this program will be to provide weekly legal and/or sheriff’s department policy information to the community through the use of social media. The community will also be afforded the opportunity to e-mail questions directly to the station for discussion or clarification.

This week’s topic: Missing Person Reporting

It is a common belief that one must wait a specified of time before reporting someone missing. This is NOT TRUE. The sheriff's department DOES NOT require someone to wait a specified period of time before reporting someone missing. In fact, the sooner someone is reported missing, the greater the likelihood the person will be located unharmed.

The sheriff's department considers someone missing to be a very serious matter, especially those missing who are considered to be at high risk (children, elderly, suspicion of foul play, etc.). As such, whenever anyone is discovered missing, do not hesitate to call your local sheriff's station or police agency right away.
