DPD PARTICIPATES IN GLOBAL TWEET-A-THON
Police agencies from around the world are connecting virtually via Twitter. The first ever 24 hour Global Tweet-a-thon will take place tomorrow, March 22, 2013, starting at 8 a.m. The Dallas Police Department along with over 100 agencies from U.S., Canada, UK, Sweden, Iceland, and Australia will be participating in the Tweet-a-thon.
Some agencies will be using the Tweet-a-thon to tweet a virtual ride along from the patrol point of view. The Dallas Police Department will be using the Tweet-a-thon to not only tweet some calls, but also will tweet an inside view of our different units, youth programs, and events. We will also feature some of our reality show officers. The current Police Women of Dallas, featured on the OWN Network, will also be tweeting from their Twitter accounts (@tracyjones_, @Cheryl1913, @AngelaNordyke, @DPDYvette). Our Community Affairs Unit will also be tweeting from @DPDCA. Officers from the Media Relations office will be tweeting from the main Dallas Police Account (@DallasPD) and can be identified by their badge numbers. For a list of the badge numbers of the PIO’s tweeting, see our Twitter profile page.
The goal of the Global Tweet-a-thon is to bring attention to the use of social media by law enforcement agencies. Agencies will tweet using the same hashtag, #POLTWT, to create awareness about police work and issues police face as well as to promote the use of social media in policing.
"We are excited to bring together police agencies around the world in this first of its kind social media event," said Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizer of the Global Police Tweet-a-thon. "We hope it sends the message to non-law enforcement that their police officers are up to speed with social media, and that they should use the channel to talk with police officers and to be stewards of public safety."
Any agency can join the Tweet-a-thon and tweet any portion of the 24-hour period. For a list of participating agencies, please visit:
