Aggressive Driving Campaign April 5-14, 2013
Montpelier, ID - An aggressive driving education and enforcement campaign is planned for April 5-14. Law enforcement agencies statewide, including the Montpelier Police Department, will step up patrols to catch speeders on all roads in Idaho. The education and enforcement campaign is funded by a federal grant administered by the Idaho Transportation Department.
In 2011, Aggressive Driving was a contributing factor in 49% of all crashes in Idaho. The number one contributing factor for fatal and serious injury crashes was speed. While 72% of all aggressive driving crashes occur in urban areas, 83% of the fatal aggressive driving crashes occur in rural areas. The economic cost of crashes involving speed was $967 million dollars, which represents 45% of the total cost of all crashes in Idaho.
The goal is to support the statewide highway performance measure to reduce the five year fatality rate through the decrease in motor vehicle related deaths and serious injuries by decreasing crashes as a result of speed. Drivers who ignore basic traffic safety laws could be subject to substantial fines and points against their licenses. “Aggressive Driving is a serious problem,” said Lieutenant Wells. “Let’s work together in making our streets safe for all those who are on them.”
