COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES
The Tustin Police Department has identified an unusually high occurrence of commercial burglaries occurring over the last 12 months.
These burglaries are occurring primarily in offices and retail establishments. However, we have had burglaries at construction sites, restaurants, warehouses, markets, car washes and non-profits such as churches. The burglaries are occurring most often when businesses are closed or on weekends.
The primary method of entry is to enter the establishment by smashing a window or prying open a door. At least three of the burglaries have been associated with a larger ring of burglaries operating throughout Orange County. In these cases the suspects steal the entire safe, cash register or lottery tickets.
Business owners are advised to be aware and remain vigilant to protect their property.
Recommendations:
Leave the cash register drawer open and empty and visible from outside. If the criminal sees there is no cash in the register, he might bypass the location.
Bolt safes to the ground or hide smaller safes.
Secure high end merchandise.
Notify the alarm company to contact Tustin Police immediately if there is an alarm when no employees are present. Eliminating the delay could help us catch the suspects in action. Tustin Police does still bill for false alarms, so that would need to be taken into consideration.
Update surveillance equipment. Surveillance equipment is getting more advanced and more affordable. If possible, add cameras to the exterior of the business to capture suspect vehicles.
