PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IN CROSSWALKS
On Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Palmyra Borough Police Department conducted a safety detail at the "marked" crosswalk located at East Main Street & Lincoln Street (between 1:45 PM and 2:30 PM). Police monitored traffic approaching the intersection while a civilian volunteer pedestrian attempted to cross the street in the crosswalk. As a result, six (6) drivers were cited for failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
Palmyra Police wish to remind drivers that according to Pennsylvania State Law they must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians that are within any "marked" or "unmarked" crosswalks at an intersection. Violation of this law is a summary offense and, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of $50, plus costs of $87.00, for a total of $137.00.
Palmyra Police will be continuing frequent details of this type at all crosswalks (marked and unmarked) in Palmyra Borough.
