FIREFIGHTER STRUCK AND KILLED BY VEHICLE IN CLINTON TWP.
Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III and Clinton Township Police Director
Robert Manney are reporting that an investigation is underway into a New Jersey State Forest
Fire Service Firefighter that was struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 629 in Clinton
Township.
According to Prosecutor Kearns, “The victim is a Firefighter with the New Jersey State Forest
Fire Service. He and other members were conducting a controlled burn along Route 629 near
Round Valley Reservoir. According to our preliminary investigation, it appears that a heavy
smoke condition associated with the controlled burn was present at the time of the crash and may
have caused reduced visibility when a shift in the wind occurred. The victim was struck by a
vehicle and did not survive his injuries.”
The incident is being investigated by the Clinton Township Police Department and the
Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Collision Team. Responding units
included the Clinton Rescue Squad and EMS-1 Paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center. The
Town of Clinton Police Department is assisting with the investigation.
The Prosecutor added, “Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and his colleagues
in the Forest Fire Service.”
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification to family members. Additional
information will be released as it is developed. This is an active investigation.
