Keeping Family and Friends Safe-Crime Prevention Tips

Crime Prevention Tips

Preventing Residential Burglaries:

Residential burglaries literally hit close to home. Being a victim in which your home and privacy is invaded can be a scary and unsettling thought.

What a Burglar Looks For When “Shopping” for a Home:

A home that appears to be unoccupied, are the newspapers piling up on the lawn? Is the mailbox overflowing and the lights always on or always off?

Are vehicles that are usually in the driveway not there, and or vehicles in the driveway not being used for days on end?

Is access to the home easily hidden? Do the hedges block windows of the home? Does the home lack sufficient outside lighting thus preventing others to see what is going on around the perimeter of the home?

Is the residence secured by an alarm and if so are you advertising the alarm company name by means of sign or window stickers. Burglars do not like alarms and most likely move on to an easier target. Most residential burglaries take place during work hours.

Open garage doors or when working out in the yard and leaving tools of the trade easily accessible for a snatch and grab to thieves driving by. An unsecure garage usually has your tools which they can use against you to make entry into the home.

Tips Homeowners Can Do to make it Harder for a Burglar

Assure all doors and windows are locked, and invest in a deadbolt lock with long bolts. A solid door frame makes breaking down a door a chore and more work than the burglar wants to do.

Keep shrubs and hedges trimmed around the windows so forced entry into the home can be seen by neighbors and or the police on patrol.

Keep your garage door closed at all times and use it to store your vehicles. This makes it harder for the burglar to determine when you’re home and when you’re not. This will also help prevent your vehicle from burglary and or theft of your vehicle.

Know your neighbors and work together to prevent crime in the neighborhood. Report any and all suspicious activity, persons, and vehicles.

Be cautious about putting out the empty box for the new TV or computer you recently purchased at the curbside for trash pickup. Cut the box up or find another means to dispose of it.

Consider a safe deposit box for jewelry storage, especially expensive jewelry, or jewelry you don’t wear often. Photograph all precious items and write down all your serial numbers.

Most phones today have cameras so you can also store your photos and serial numbers in the cellular phone memory. The serial number is like a finger print in which none are the same. A serial number increases your chances of recovery by Law Enforcement.

These Tips are just are few of the many ways to protect yourself. Please spread the word to family and friends.
