(Update) Armed Carjacking LASD Deputy Involved Shootings, 300 blk Woods Av, East LA & 570 blk Fairview, LA

Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the deputy- involved shootings that started on Monday, April 29, 2013, after an armed carjacking that took place in East Los Angeles.

Investigators have learned that East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station deputies responded to the 300 block of Woods Avenue, East Los Angeles, regarding an armed carjacking just occurred call.

When deputies arrived, the victim told deputies that the suspect, a male Hispanic, stole his vehicle at gun-point. The victim was not injured.

Deputies searched the area and located the stolen vehicle as it entered the westbound 60 Freeway. When the suspect exited the freeway, deputies attempted to conduct a felony traffic stop; however, the suspect failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

The vehicle pursuit continued through several surface streets within the City of Los Angeles. At one point, deputies attempted to deploy Spike Strips in an attempt to disable the vehicle. While a deputy was attempting to deploy the Spike Strips, the suspect attempted to run over the deputy with the stolen vehicle. The deputy was not struck by the vehicle.

The vehicle pursuit terminated in the 500 block of Progress Place, Los Angeles. The suspect then exited the vehicle and jumped over a chain-link fence. After the suspect made it over the fence, he turned and pointed a hand gun at deputies, resulting in the first deputy involved shooting. The suspect was not hit by deputies’ gunfire.

The suspect fled the scene, ran to an apartment complex and forced his way inside an occupied apartment, forcing the residents to seek shelter in the bathroom.

A Sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau K-9 Deputy responded to the location and began to scout the area. The suspect shot at the K-9 Deputy from inside the apartment where he barricaded himself. Neither the K-9 deputy, nor his dog was struck by the suspect's gunfire.

A Special Enforcement Bureau Team responded and established communication with the suspect via a Crisis Negotiator. Sheriff's personnel made several announcements for the suspect to peacefully surrender and exit the apartment, but he did not comply.

Special Enforcement Bureau deputies formulated a plan to rescue the occupants inside the apartment, and subsequently rescued them through a bathroom window. In addition, occupants from neighboring apartment buildings were evacuated.

During the stand-off, Special Enforcement Bureau deputies introduced tear gas in order to force the suspect out of the apartment. The suspect emerged from the apartment two different times pointing a handgun at deputies.

The first time the suspect emerged, he pointed a handgun at deputies, resulting in a second deputy involved shooting.

The suspect emerged a second time, again pointed a handgun at deputies, and a third deputy involved shooting occurred.

Later the suspect emerged from the apartment, ran toward Special Enforcement Bureau deputies and fired at them with a handgun, causing a fourth deputy-involved shooting.

The suspect was struck numerous times by deputies' gunfire. He was treated at the scene by paramedics where he was pronounced dead.

A loaded .38 caliber revolver was recovered from the suspect at the scene.

The suspect was identified as a 35-year old male Hispanic, a resident of the City of Los Angeles.

The suspect and the occupants of the residence where he barricaded himself were not affiliated.

No deputies were injured.

The suspect's name is not being released at this time.

The investigation is on-going.
