Riley Fire Department Checking Department's Dry Hydrant System

Riley Fire Department members were out in the township today testing the department's dry hydrants. RFD currently maintains a system of 10 dry hydrants. Dry hydrants are hydrants that are connected to a static source of water such as a pond or lake. Dry hydrants are typically located in rural areas where the standard forced hydrants of municipal water systems are not readily available. RFD Members flush the hydrants and then pull water from the body of water to ensure proper flow is available and that the hydrant is working correctly in the event it is needed during an emergency situation.

Since each body of water is different, this also gives our members an opportunity to become familiar with the location of the hydrants in addition to learning the tactics and resources required to access each of the hydrants.

Members will be out at various times until all of the dry hydrants have been inspected.
