Riley Fire Department Completes Damage Assessment Following Touchdown of Tornado.
At approximately 8:24pm this evening Vigo County Central Dispatch began to receive reports of a tornado in the area of US Hwy 41 / Carlisle Rd. Following an announcement over the radio by Central Dispatch regarding the possible touchdown of a tornado, RFD department personnel looked west out of the firehouse on St Rd 159. Personnel were surprised to see a tornado west of the firehouse in a field traveling northwest narrowly missing the Volunteer Field at Riley Recreation League and striking a nearby residence. At 8:37pm Riley Fire Department started apparatus to the area to begin assessing the damage. The only damage found in Riley was a storage shed at the residence that had been leveled. No injuries were reported.
Riley Fire Department would like to remind people to heed warnings and watches when issued by the National Weather Service. In the event of a warning, seek shelter in a sturdy interior room. Severe thunderstorms can and do produce tornados.
