RFD's 6th Annual Bicycle Rodeo a Success

Today Riley, Seelyville, and Honey Creek Fire Departments teamed up with the Indiana State University Police Department to once again host the 6th Annual Bicycle Rodeo. The rodeo began in 2008 following the tragic death of Riley Elementary student Cameron Langefeld who was struck and killed while riding his bicycle on South Fruitridge St. The Bicycle Rodeo is a one day, free event that takes place on the south parking lot of Riley Elementary School and targets children in grades K-5 that reside in Honey Creek, Lost Creek, and Riley Townships. 35 students participated in today’s event.

Bicycle Officers from Indiana State University instructed children on the safe operation of bicycles. Once registered all of the children’s bicycles were checked for properly functioning chains, brakes, and inflated tires. Following a short safety briefing, children peddled through a simulated road course set up within the school’s parking lot. The course provided students an opportunity to learn about road signs and how to safely navigate a bicycle in tight turns and spaces.

In addition to the activities for children, fire department personnel provided the children and parents with a variety of safety and fire prevention material to further encourage safe practices at home.

At the completion of today’s event, all student participants were entered into a drawing for a new bicycle!
