On June 9, 2013 at approximately 6:00pm, Thurmont Police responded to the area of Sunny Court in Thurmont for an assault in progress. Upon the officer’s arrival a male victim was discovered lying on the ground bleeding from a head injury. The officer learned that the victim was struck in the head with an aluminum baseball bat by the suspect, who was identified as: Zachary A. Simmers, age 29, of Sunny Court, Thurmont. Further investigation revealed that Simmers had punctured the tires of his girlfriend’s vehicle and the victim tried to intervene. The victim and the suspect began to fight when Simmers assaulted the victim with the bat. The victim was transported to Meritus Medical Center where he was admitted for further treatment. Mr. Simmers was arrested and charged with: First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, Destruction of Property, Reckless Endangerment, and Disorderly Conduct. Simmers is being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bond.
