Commander Bruce Promotion Announcement
It gives me great pleasure to announce the promotion of Sergeant Tom Bruce to Police Commander effective June 21, 2013.
Tom began his career with us as a police officer trainee on April 7, 1988, and promoted to the rank of police officer shortly after on May 30, 1988. On September 29, 2000, he advanced to the position of police corporal and after participating in a competitive examination process, he promoted to police sergeant on May 9, 2003.
Sergeant Bruce has attained his Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Supervisory P.O.S.T. certificates. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, and holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach. He was named the Cypress Police Officers’ Association Officer of the Year in 2000 and received the Cypress Police Department’s medal of distinction in 2007 for his efforts in developing the Department’s technology enhancements.
During his tenure, Tom served as a bike patrol officer, field training officer, K-9 handler, detective, and Chief’s Adjutant. He has served as a sergeant in all three divisions: Operations, Administration, and Investigations, and his sergeant ancillary duties have included press information officer, mobile command vehicle supervisor, K-9 Unit supervisor, Jail supervisor, and the Police Service Officer supervisor.
