LASD South Los Angeles Station deputies are well trained. Patrol training conducted at Lawndale High School. 7/9/13

On Tuesday, July 9, 2013, deputies from the South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station/Lawndale Service Center conducted in-depth field training at Lawndale High School. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department took part in handling four scenarios that they may encounter while on patrol. The scenarios consisted of a vehicle traffic stop of suspects wanted for a robbery, a pedestrian stop of armed suspects, a pedestrian stop of a mentally ill person and a domestic violence call.

During each of the scenarios, the deputies encountered different situations. For example, during the domestic violence call, two deputies encountered an armed male suspect that had just assaulted his wife. The armed suspect was still armed with a handgun when the deputies arrived. After the conclusion of that scenario, two other deputies handled the same domestic violence scenario; however, this time the suspect was not armed and was the victim after his wife assaulted him. The purpose of changing the scenarios was to match what the deputies would encounter while on patrol.

Assistant Sheriff James Hellmold and Captain Eli Vera briefed the deputies on the importance of being well trained and professional during all types of encounters that they may face while on patrol. Field Training Officers, and supervisors monitored the deputies performance and provided valuable critiques after each scenario.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is known as being one of, if not the best trained law enforcement agency in the world.

A special recognition to the South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station training staff who worked diligently to schedule this training and to the Lawndale High School personnel who allowed us to conduct our training on their campus.
