On July 17, 2013, at approximately 10:00 a.m. the City of Lawndale Animal Control and deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, South Los Angeles Station/Lawndale Service Center received a call that there were two puppies locked in a hot vehicle. The caller was concerned for the safety of the puppies.

Personnel from the City of Lawndale and deputies responded to the 14500 block of Larch Avenue, Lawndale and saw that there were two puppies locked in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. One of the dogs was an 8-month-old German Shepherd and Pit Bull mix. The other dog was a 1 ½ -year-old Dachshund and Pit Bull mix.

As the animal control officer and deputies tried to free the puppies from the hot vehicle, the puppies tried sticking their noses out the windows that were cracked open. The puppies were trying to lick the animal control officer and deputies as they tried to free them. Since the owner of the vehicle could not be located, deputies were able to unlock the vehicle and animal control was able to take control of each puppy.

Lawndale Municipal Services Manager Debbie Holland stated, “When the vehicle’s door opened, a strong odor of urine could be smelled coming from the vehicle.”

Lieutenant John Hocking indicated, “Both puppies appeared to be happy to be out of the hot vehicle.”

The investigation showed that the puppies did not have any water in the vehicle. There was a water dish behind the driver’s seat; however, it was empty and had dirt in the bottom of it. The owner, Courtney Beach, 24-year-old man from the City of Carson had left the puppies in the vehicle for at least 8 hours. Beach was issued a citation for leaving the puppies unattended in a vehicle without water.

Lawndale Animal Control took the puppies to a local veterinarian animal hospital to have them examined. The puppies received their shots and are in good condition.

Lieutenant John Hocking, said, “Please do not leave your animals in a hot vehicle. It could be deadly to your pet.”
