Fruitport Township Police Department received a report from the Fruitport VFW they are missing seven (7) honor guard ceremonial rifles.
Police were called at approximately 9:40 a.m. on 07/26/2013. Members of the VFW reported seven (7) rifles fell off a truck in the area of Airline and Sheridan in Fruitport Township. Witnesses observed two male subjects in a different vehicle stop and pick up the rifles before the VFW truck was able to get back to where the rifles had fallen.
The rifles are described as Springfield M-1 Garand .30 Caliber rifles – they are similar to the rifle depicted in the attached image. The rifles are equipped to shoot blanks, and they are not safe for firing live ammunition.
The rifles are used for military funeral services and other VFW ceremonial activities, and it is important they are returned to the VFW right away for upcoming services.
