Smoke Alarm Save Maricopa Residents

Smoke Alarm Save Maricopa Residents

Maricopa, ARIZ. (August 12, 2013) At approximately 1:00am, smoke alarms sounded inside a home in the 43000 block of West Eddie Way in the Villages subdivision waking up residents and alerted them to danger. As the residents woke up they did not see any smoke outside their bedroom or within in the upstairs of their home. Yet they made the right decision and left the home and then saw flames shooting from behind their garage door. The residents quickly called 9-1-1. When fire crews arrived on-scene they found the garage of the two–story home fully involved in flames.

Crews quickly worked to contain the fire to the garage and it’s contents. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading into the remainder of the home. Crews were then able to quickly remove the smoke to minimize its impact to the personal belonging of the residents.

Firefighters from Sun Lakes Fire Department and Gila River Fire Department assisted on scene.

Three residents are temporarily displaced along with their pets, a small dog and cat that was rescued from the home treated on scene for smoke inhalation.

Smoke alarms save lives. This incident illustrates the importance of regularly checking your smoke alarms and their batteries. Smoke alarms enable you to have time to leave a structure. As soon as you hear an alarm sounding leave the building. These residents heard the alarm and did not hesitate which saved their lives.

The Maricopa Fire Department urges all resident to check their alarms monthly and replace their batteries twice a year.
