Local public and many private schools start school today in Anne Arundel County. Officers will be at and around our schools this week to facilitate a safe start to the new school year. Hear are a few tips:

ADULTS/STUDENT DRIVERS:

Don't text and drive, don't talk on the phone.

Watch out when driving near intersections... look for bus stops and children crossing the street.

Yield for school busses, and remember you must stop for flashing red lights.

Slow down and expect the unexpected... children darting in the street, etc.

Follow the directions of crossing guards, and please be nice to them!

Budget extra travel time so you don't feel rushed.

CHILDREN:

Use cross walks, don't wear dark clothes that make you hard to see.

Use the buddy system; don't walk or ride your bike alone...
Avoid walking or riding your bike in areas that are not visible to the general public (behind buildings, paths through woods, etc.). Have a pre-planned walking or riding route that your parents know.

Practice school bus safety... Be careful when exiting the bus... Follow scool bus rules, and be respectful of other student and the school bus driver.

If you ride a bike or skateboard, wear a helmet!
