VEHICLE RELATED CRIME TRENDS
This is a notification to remind our residents how important it is to lock up their vehicles and clear their vehicles of all valuable/personal property. We have found a number of thefts from vehicles occur because a citizen fails to lock a door or close a window. These kinds of crimes are known as crimes of opportunity. Unfortunately, criminals are finding numerous opportunities throughout the city of Tustin. From June to July of this year, there was a 77% increase in this type of vehicle related crime.
What is a criminal looking for: ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING! It might be the vehicle itself or the wallet left on the front seat. It could be the personal documents left in the vehicle, which can then lead to yet another crime of identity theft. The only way to curtail this problem is to leave the interior of your vehicle clear of anything of potential interest and lock your vehicle. If your vehicle is locked, but there is something of interest inside a criminal may resort to breaking a window, which is commonly referred to as a “smash and grab.”
GPS/Navigation systems are one of the most common items stolen from vehicles. If you have a portable navigation system, remember to remove the holder as well as the GPS system. Catalytic converter thefts have also increased over the years. Toyota’s, Honda’s, and Corolla’s are the vehicles commonly targeted. If you have a garage it’s best to park your vehicle in it.
Here is a list of additional items criminal’s like to steal from locked or unlocked vehicles: purses, iPods, stereos, laptops, checkbooks, cell phones, cash, credit cards, packages, cd’s, etc.
