Update Elkhart Police Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting
Elkhart County – The name of the individual that was shot yesterday by officers with the Elkhart City Police Department is Jamie I. Benavidez, 27, of Elkhart. Benavidez was allegedly armed with a gun trying to enter a home moments before officers arrived. Benavidez and a juvenile male both fled from the house at house at 332 West Hubbard.
During the ensuing foot chase the juvenile male, age 14, gave up to police and was arrested at 312 West Lusher. The chase continued after Benavidez until it ended moments later at 328 West Lusher. Police shot Benavidez after he allegedly pointed a gun at them. Benavidez died as a result of the gunshots.
In all three Elkhart City Police officers discharged their guns at Benavidez.
The juvenile was arrested for misdemeanor resisting arrest pending review from the Elkhart County Prosecutors office. He was interviewed by state police detectives and later released to his father.
