On September 2, 2013, at 12:30 PM, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies from Parks Bureau were dispatched to a train platform at 8615 Graham Avenue, Los Angeles regarding a Sheriff’s Transient Service Deputy detaining a male black adult suspected of committing an assault at Colonel Leon H. Washington Park.
The investigation into the assault revealed that a victim contacted Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Security Officers at the train platform and pointed out the suspect who was identified as Andre Joiner, male black 55 years old and a resident of Los Angeles.
In furtherance of the investigation, the deputies discovered that the victim had been sitting in Colonel Leon H. Washington Park with his boyfriend, when suspect Joiner and another suspect a male black approximately 45 years old, black hair, 5 foot 7 inches tall, 180 pounds wearing black pants and black shirt approached them.
The suspects questioned the victim’s sexuality and then started hitting the victim with broom sticks while yelling anti-gay epithets. The victim ran out of the park while his boyfriend ran home.
At one point, suspect Joiner caught the victim and started strangling him but the victim broke free and ran toward the train platform.
The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
Suspect Joiner was arrested and booked at Century Sheriff’s Station for Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Hate Crime) and is being held in lieu of a $30,000 bail.
