Car versus building accident
At approximately 10:10 A.M., on Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 the Columbia Township Police Department responded to 400 S. Main St. for a private property personal injury accident. The caller to 911 advised that a car had crashed through the front of the Shopko store, at Main and Constitution, and the driver had received injuries as a result of the crash.
Upon arrival officers found a 2005 Hyundai Elantra partially inside the Shopko Store. The vehicle had traveled approximately half the length of the vehicle into the interior of the store after crashing through the wall. As a result of the crash the East (front) wall had been breached and the structural integrity was compromised.
The operator of the vehicle is identified as Rexford Fletcher 94 years of age of Somerset Township. He was treated at the scene by the Columbia Township Fire Department, and was then transported to Allegiance by Jackson Community Ambulance. His injuries were non-life threatening.
The Village of Brooklyn department of public works assisted by temporarily reinforcing the wall until repairs could be made. The Village building inspector was also notified of damage, and an inspection will be forthcoming to ensure the safety of the structure.
The crash occurred due to driver error, and alcohol was not a factor. The driver is being referred to the Secretary of State’s Office for a re-exam.
