PRESS RELEASE: Monday Evening Pursuit Leads to Arrest of Claypool Man

On September 9, 2013, at approximately 5:18 p.m. Warsaw Police were called to Meijer’s located at 1200 Lake City Highway for a man there causing problems and refusing to leave. Officers arrived and were informed that the suspect had been asked by Meijer employees to leave but he was becoming increasingly mad and belligerent. Officers made contact with 33 year old David L. Metzger of Claypool, IN., who began yelling and arguing with officers. Metzger was warned multiple times to leave the property or he would be arrested for trespass. Eventually Metzger was given a written trespass warning and he got into his vehicle and began to leave. As Metzger began to drive out of the lot, he drove and parked in another parking space. Officers re-approached Metzger and directed him to get out of the car as informed him that he was under arrest. Metzger then spoke an obscenity and as the officer attempted to open the locked driver’s door, Metzger drove off at a high rate of speed. Officer’s attempted to make a traffic stop on Metzger in the parking lot but Metzger refused to stop. Metzger’s vehicle turned eastbound on Lake City Highway (US 30) and fled at a high rate of speed. Officers initiated a pursuit and near Center Street utilized Stop Sticks® to flatten the right side tires of Metzger’s Suzuki SX4. Metzger continued east on Lake City Highway eventually stopping east of County Road 250 East after loosing a shredded tire. After the vehicle stopped, Metzger continued to resist and was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody. Once at the jail, Metzger continued to be uncooperative and attempted to bite several of the jailers. Metzger was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on a D felony charge of Resisting Law Enforcement with a motor vehicle, Trespass, and Reckless Driving. His bond was set at $2000.00 surety only. Warsaw Police were assisted by the Indiana State Police, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, and the Winona Lake Police Department.
