DATE: Sunday, September 22, 2013
TIME: 4:25 PM
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Sunday, September 22, 2013, at approximately 4:25 PM, in the 7300 block of Alondra Boulevard, Paramount.
Detectives have learned that a Lakewood Sheriff's Station deputy attempted to make contact with a suspicious pedestrian at the location in Paramount. The suspect appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was uncooperative with the deputy. The suspect made a quick movement that made the deputy believe the suspect was reaching for a weapon, and the deputy fired rounds at the suspect. The suspect was not hit.
When an assisting deputy arrived at the scene, the deputies attempted to take the suspect into custody, but the suspect became combative by kicking and fighting with the deputies. A Taser was then used on the suspect and the suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries resulting from the use of force with the Taser.
Charges are pending against the suspect.
No deputies were injured by gunfire.
Whenever a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and the suspect is not wounded, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as Sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
