Troopers Perform CPR on LaPorte Man
Portage, Porter County-Two Troopers just happened to be in the right place at the right time for a LaPorte man this afternoon.
At approximately 3:10 P.M., this Monday, September 23, 2013, afternoon, Charles W. Morgan, 68 of LaPorte and his wife were east bound on I-94, just east of the Portage exit (mile marker 19.1), coming home from a doctor’s appointment at the University of Chicago when Charles began to feel ill. Morgan was driving his 2012 Ford Fusion in the left lane when he veered to the left and began to slow down. The Fusion went off the road and hit the concrete median barrier wall twice before his wife was able to lean over and press on the brake pedal to stop the car.
Tim Mark of Trail Creek, Indiana, saw the Fusion hit the barrier wall and pulled over. He realized that Morgan was in distress and removed him from the vehicle.
Master Trooper David Eggers, assigned to ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and Master Trooper Tom Mechling, assigned to the Bremen District were in the area escorting a superload (windmill blade) when the dispatch came out over the police radio. Both troopers recognized that Morgan was in distress and began to perform CPR until Portage EMS arrived and was able to take over.
Morgan was taken to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso where he is in critical condition.
Assisting: Indiana Department of Transportation Hoosier Helpers, Portage EMS and Trooper Nathan Wolfe
