THIS WEEKEND: How To Have Fun (Safely) At A Rave + Traffic on Shoreline

This weekend at Shoreline Amphitheatre will see sold-out crowds for the “Beyond Wonderland Bay Area” event starting at 1:00PM on Saturday, September 28th, and ending at 11:00PM on Sunday, September 29th.

**We anticipate traffic will be backed-up on Shoreline for 60+ minutes during the start of the event, as well as on Sunday afternoon. As attendees will be coming throughout the weekend, the back-up time may vary. Please take alternate routes, or avoid the area completely.**

Insomniac, who produces this experience-based event, reminds attendees about their policies on drug tolerance and staying hydrated on their website here: http://beyondwonderland.com/general-info.php. To reinforce their guidelines, Mountain View Police and Santa Clara County Public Health want to provide further information on ways to stay safe while having fun this weekend!

-Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Free water refill stations are available at the event but you can only use the “Reusable Insomniac Aluminum Water Bottles (must be empty upon entry).”
-No drug use or possession. MVPD will have officers working all areas enforcing drug related laws in and around the event. Illegal substances and drug-related paraphernalia are not allowed.
-Under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Event staff can refuse to let you in to the event if you show signs of being under the influence, as well as it’s against the law.
-Food. Don’t forget to eat, especially foods high in protein.
-Stay together. It’s always a good idea to go with a friend. Stick together and take care of one another. If you get separated have a plan to meet at a designated location.
-Cell service. Even if you have your cell phone, it may not always work due to cell tower capacity and the number of concert goers using their phones. If you need assistance look for uniformed police personnel, or staff.
-Pre-Plan. Here are a few important numbers to program into your phone:
**If you have an emergency, always call 911
**Mountain View PD’s direct emergency number is 650-903-6922
**Anonymous tips can be sent by text to 274637 and include “mvtips” in the body of your text along with your message, plus a photo and/or video.
-Huh? Hearing loss is nothing to laugh about. Protect your ears by wearing ear plugs. Prolonged exposure to loud noises can cause permanent hearing loss.

Here’s a list of commonly used drugs we have come across during large events:
-MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, Molly, E, X, Thizz, Thizzle, XTC
-GHB or Gamma-hydoxybutyrate, also known as Grievous Bodily Harm, G, Liquid Ecstasy, Georgia Home Boy
-Methamphetamine, also known as Speed, Ice, Chalk, Meth, Crystal, Crank, Fire, Glass
-Ketamine, also known as Special K, K, Vitamin K, Cat Valium
-Rohypnol, also known as Roofies, Rophies, Roche, Forget-me Pill
-LSD or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, also known as Acid, Boomers, Yellow Sunshines

What can happen if you take a stimulant like MDMA or Methamphetamine? You may have an increased heart rate, extreme rise in body temperature, uncontrollable movements, dehydration, or grinding teeth. And if you take a sedative/hallucinogenic like GHB, Ketamine, LSD, and Rohypnol, here’s what you may experience: Slow breathing, respiratory problems, confusion, tremors, and nausea.

More information on “Club Drugs” can be found on the FBI’s website here: http://www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/clubdrugs.

“Ecstasy and other ‘club drugs’ have very serious short and long-term health effects,” said Interim Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody. “These drugs may be mixed with other chemicals, so people may not know what they are taking or how these drugs interact. This can be extremely dangerous, and even fatal. We hope to help raise awareness before this weekend’s event, so attendees can have fun, but at the same time, stay safe.”

There are a few simple ways to protect yourself and your friends. And if you see something suspicious, don’t ignore it. Part of having fun together in a group is ensuring everyone has a great experience!
-Don’t drink something you didn’t pour yourself.
-Watch the person who is preparing the drink for you.
-Never drink from group drink bowls, or anything that’s shared.
-Keep a close eye on your drink at all times. Do not rely on someone else to watch it for you.
-If you think you’ve been drugged, seek medical attention RIGHT AWAY!
-If someone passes out and you suspect he or she may have been given drugs, call for medical attention immediately.
-If you see something, say something. It’s takes a community to stay safe. Do your part to ensure this event is one to remember for the right reasons.

“Our number one goal is to ensure the safety of everyone attending any event hosted in Mountain View,” says Sgt. Albarillo, who is in charge of special events at Mountain View Police Department. “When it comes to RAVES, we want to underscore the importance of personal health and awareness. Stay hydrated, take breaks, stick with your friends, and pay attention to your surroundings. Report anything suspicious to us or event staff.”
