Early Morning Fruitport Township Incident on I-96
At approximately 5:55 a.m. on Friday, October 04, 2013, Fruitport Township Police Department responded with Fruitport Township Fire Department to a vehicle fire on eastbound I-96 near the Sternberg Road overpass. The vehicle fire was not related to a crash, and the cause is under investigation. The vehicle was occupied by the driver at the time of the fire, and the driver was able to get out of the vehicle without injury.
At approximately this same time, another eastbound vehicle saw the vehicle on fire and traffic slowing in the area due to this incident. The driver of this vehicle lost control of the vehicle on the wet roadway from earlier rain. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. This vehicle was occupied by only the driver at the time of the rollover. The driver was transported by ambulance from the scene to Hackley Hospital for injuries sustained in the rollover crash. The injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.
Traffic lanes for eastbound traffic were shut down temporarily while emergency responders handled these incidents. One lane was opened a short time later to permit traffic flow.
A third incident, a rear-end crash, took place during the traffic congestion in this same area before police had cleared vehicles from the previous incidents and emergency responders were still on the scene. This crash resulted in minor damage to both involved vehicles. Neither of the drivers from these vehicles required transport from the scene by ambulance, but one of the involved drivers reportedly went for treatment by private transport after leaving the scene.
No further information, including identifying information of the involved parties, is being released by police at this time.
