This information is meant to educate citizens about a scam which has been occuring nationwide in which an unknown person calls a business and demands money be put on a "green dot card". These cards are legitimate financial instruments and are similar to pre-paid Visa cards. Once the cards have a balance, the number is given to the suspect caller who then has access to the cash.

While the majority of these calls are to businesses, it is possible citizens could receive an email or phone call requesting them to obtain a pre-paid "green-dot" card and provide the account number to the requester. These calls often threaten some type of action for failure to comply (arrest) or offers a service (health care) after the account number is received. In most cases, these calls originate from outside the United States but the numbers are spoofed to appear as though they are from the US.
