ACCIDENT FOLLOWING A POLICE PURSUIT
On 10/10/13 at approximately 11:20 PM Officer Jonathan Sullens was patrolling on N. Oakwood when he noticed a white Cadillac without the headlights activated driving northbound. Officer Sullens initiated a traffic stop and the Cadillac pulled over at 500 N. Oakwood. Officer Sullens exited his patrol car and began walking up to the Cadillac. The driver of the Cadillac accelerated off northbound on Oakwood. Officer Sullens initiated a pursuit of the Cadillac. The Cadillac turned East on Chestnut and accelerated. Officer Sullens continued to pursue the vehicle eastbound and observed the vehicle leave the roadway just under the Van Buren overpass. The Cadillac entered the train yard and became airborne. Officer Sullens slowed his police car to make the turn. Officer Sullens lost control of his patrol car and hit a utility pole. Officer Sullens rushed to the pursued vehicle to check the welfare of the driver or any passengers in the car. They found that the vehicle was empty so officers began searching the area for the driver and possible passengers. They found a white male who was identified as Cody Hamm lying on the ground. Hamm was ejected from the car. They found that he was unconscious and bleeding from a head wound. LIFE EMS was called and arrived on scene to assist. Hamm was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital. Hamm did not survive the accident. Officer Sullens was not injured in the accident. It is unknown why Hamm decided on the action that he took at the time.
