TAJIKISTAN FEMALE POLICE OFFICER DELEGATION VISITS ORANGE COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES

For the past few days, a delegation of 12 female police officers from the central Asian nation of Tajikistan visited various police agencies in Southern California. The group started its visit last week, attending the Women Leaders in Law Enforcement Conference in San Jose. They remained in Northern California to visit two bay area agencies before traveling south for three additional days. As part of a goodwill tour sponsored in part by the California Police Chiefs Association, the Tajik officers toured the Irvine Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Fullerton Police Department, Cypress Police Department, Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center, and West Cities Communications Center. Officers from Cal State Fullerton Police Department, Placentia Police Department, Los Alamitos Police Department and Seal Beach Police Department also participated in the events in Southern California. Their visit culminated in attending this week’s Cypress City Council meeting where the Tajik officers met the Mayor and members of the Cypress City Council.

Female police officers in Tajikistan have been traditionally assigned solely to administrative duties, very similar to the beginnings for women in law enforcement in the United States. Their visit was designed to allow the Tajik officers an opportunity to meet and interact with female police officers and to watch them work alongside their male counterparts. Tajikistan is moving toward increasing the range of responsibilities for female police officers including field patrol and the investigation of crimes against women and children, a progression that mirrors the evolution of female police officers in America.
