Student Arrested after Threats via Twitter, Lawndale High School #LASD
Early Wednesday (10/23/13) morning, South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station deputies received a call from a concerned person stating someone made threats via Twitter to shoot students at school.
By 6:30am, sheriff's detectives had identified the 17-year old owner of the Twitter account and arrived at her home in Lawndale. Investigation confirmed that the Lawndale High School student had sent the messages. She was arrested for felony Criminal Threats (422 California Penal Code) and booked at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
Sheriff’s detectives are at the student;s residence and are in the process of serving a search warrant to search for possible weapons.
Extra deputies are present at Lawndale High School to reassure students, faculty, and parents. Lawndale High School is safe.
Thank you to the concerned person who alerted us to the message and for remembering "If You See Something, Say Something."
Threats such as these are taken very seriously. Criminal threats bring fear to students, faculty, parents, and the community. They draw a significant amount of policing resources away from other legitimate purposes. Incidents such as these will continue to be handled in a very serious manner. This includes the threat when first received, as well as the investigation to determine the source.
Student, faculty and parent safety is a priority for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. We conduct drills with school administrators and students to help ensure campus safety throughout the County of Los Angeles.
