Community Fruit Park To Be Planned In Montclair on Saturday, October 26, 2013, 10:00 A.M.
COMMUNITY FRUIT PARK TO BE PLANTED IN MONTCLAIR
The City of Montclair, in partnership with Incredible Edible Community Garden (IECG), will be planting a community fruit park, on Saturday, October 26 at 10:00 a.m. The park planting and celebration will be held at Sunset Park, located at 4351 Orchard Street, Montclair. Held on Make a Difference Day, the official ceremony will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. and the planting of a variety of 30 fruit trees, to done by the community, will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. In additional, local KVCR television personality Joel Greene, host of Curiosity Quest, will make an appearance during the tree planting portion of the event.
For the past two months IECG has been working with members of the Montclair Por La Vida program, Montclair High School students and community volunteers to plan, design and create the fruit park. Once planted, the fruit park will be maintained by a team of volunteers and IECG. The fruit park will be open to the community to pick fruit for their own enjoyment.
The City of Montclair is excited to provide access to healthy foods for the community. The area where the park is located has been previously deemed a food desert, meaning it lacked access to healthy food in that part of the city. The park will provide a much needed resource to the residents who live nearby.
Funding for the park is provided by IECG, California ReLeaf, Environmental Protection Agency, Ontario Foundation, 4th District Supervisor Gary Ovitt, Integrated Infrastructure, Planning and Architecture, First 5 San Bernardino and the City of Montclair. Other park support has been provided by Bracero Landscaping and North Upland Home Depot.
