LASD Transit Services Bureau Lieutenant John Sullivan earns a Doctorate Degree, “with Honors”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Transit Services Bureau (TSB), Lieutenant John Sullivan earned a Doctorate Degree (PhD), from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya-UOC (Open University of Catalonia) Barcelona, Spain, on Monday, October 21st, 2013. Lieutenant Sullivan successfully defended his thesis, titled “Mexico’s Drug War: Cartels, Gangs, Sovereignty and the Network State”. The defense of the thesis is an examination a doctoral candidate must undergo to ensure the authenticity of the thesis and its author. Upon completion, Lieutenant Sullivan was confirmed as a Doctor of Information and Knowledge Society, Magna Cum Laude. (With Honors)
Sullivan began his career in law enforcement in 1985, as an Operations Supervisor with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, before heading West and joining the LA County Sheriff’s Department in 1988. Sullivan has held many positions within LASD during his twenty five years, including serving on the transition team when the Sheriff’s Department absorbed part of the former Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), Police Department. He served with TSB and Metro at several different ranks, including his current assignment as the TSB South Bureau, Rail Sector Area Lieutenant, overseeing law enforcement operations on the Metro Blue, Green, and Expo Rail Lines.
Lieutenant Sullivan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Government, from The College of William and Mary, in 1982. During his time at the Port Authority, he earned his Master of Arts in Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis, from The New School of Social Research in New York. Sullivan has authored or co-authored numerous books, monographs, and articles, dealing with subjects such as biosecurity, counter terrorism, and unconventional warfare. He has been asked to speak to the intelligence branches of well over half a dozen Countries, and has been recognized for his accomplishments by numerous National and International Agencies. He currently serves as a Consultant, Guest Lecturer, and Adjunct Professor, to several Schools, Universities, and Think Tanks.
