Elkhart County – At the request of the Elkhart City Police Department the Indiana State Police are investigating a shooting that involved officers tonight in Elkhart. As part of the department’s protocol an outside agency was called in to complete the investigation.
Around 8:00 p.m. this evening Elkhart City Police officer’s attempted to stop a blue and gray 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck for a traffic violation in the city. The truck was also reported stolen.
The driver of the truck refused to stop for police and led units from several departments on a chase that lasted more than 40 minutes. The pursuit took officers into Michigan before returning to Elkhart and ended with the driver being shot behind a house in the area of 4th Street and Marion Street. The subject who was shot by Elkhart City Police officers died as a result of the gunfire.
State police detectives are currently on scene interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
No officers were injured in the shooting. The victim’s name will be released in the next 24 hours.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting will be released over the next 48 hours by the Elkhart City Police Department.
