Riley Fire Department Rescues 10 Year Old Girl From Well

This evening at approximately 5:45 PM Riley Fire Department along with Sugar Creek Fire Department Technical Rescue Team, Trans-Care Ambulance and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address on Deer Dr. in Southern Vigo County. Vigo County Central Dispatch advised that a 10 year old female was playing in the backyard of a residence with her family. The child stepped onto the concrete well cover. The cover suddenly broke in half causing her to fall approximately 15 feet down into the well into the water. Riley firefighters arrived on scene and found a calm 10 year old girl holding onto the well piping. Riley firefighters lowered a ladder down to the child. Because the child remained calm, the child was able to climb up the ladder to a point where Riley firefighters were able to lift the child from the well. Riley firefighters had the child out of the well within 8 minutes of arriving. The child only suffered minor scrapes and bruises in the accident. The child did not require transportation to the hospital.
