K-9 Luger, Ingham County Sheriff’s Office Tracking/Drug dog killed!

On November 17, 2013, as a storm raged through Michigan many people had damage to their property. Included was the dog kennel of Deputy Gregory Harris of the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office. The damage allowed K-9 Luger to escape the Deputy Harris’s home that resulted in him being hit by a vehicle and being killed several blocks from the Deputy Harris’s residence. A local Vet, Dr. Agbona, of the Comprehensive Animal Hospital noted the dog in the roadway and took the deceased animal to his hospital until the owner could be located.
Officer John Hallett of the Lansing Police Department responded to the scene as the person that hit the dog at first thought it was a person.

Deputy Harris was preparing to go to work at 4:30 am when he discovered the damage to the kennel and the dog missing. He immediately started checking the neighborhood with no luck in locating Luger. Sgt. Melissa Brown started calling Vet Hospitals in the area and quickly located the remains of Lugar.

Deputy Harris has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 17 years and has been teamed with Luger for over 7 years. During that time this has been a terrific team as they have apprehended 86 suspects, seized over $50,000 in cash, located several missing persons and assisted many local and federal law enforcement agencies. Luger was 8 years old and is known to many area school children from the many presentations made to area schools Luger has been buried at the Sheriff’s Office and an appropriate marker will be placed in the near future.

Special thanks to Dr. Agbona of the Comprehensive Animal Hospital and Officer Hallett of the Lansing Police Dept., for their compassionate response to this tragic event!!!
