Parents and their “at-risk” teens paint the walls of La Puente.
Fourteen parents and "at-risk" teens participated in a community outreach event on Saturday, November 15th, 2013 a graffiti beautification project for the city of La Puente.
A 70 foot block wall on the west side of Puente Avenue, just north of Nelson Avenue that had been previously been plagued with gang graffiti was repainted with a vine and leaf pattern in order to discourage future tagging. The parents and their "at-risk" teens participated in the beautification project as part of their enrollment in Industry Sheriff's Station's "Solutions" program.
"Solutions" is a multi-step diversion program created by the Industry Sheriff's Station, in partnership with several Los Angeles County universities, to help find solutions and strategies for families struggling with teen conflicts and their destructive behaviors. The "at-risk" youths attend classes taught by California University students from Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton, Mt. Sac, Fullerton College, and Rio Hondo College; who receive internship college credits as they mentor the teens.
In addition to intervention programs established for these at-risk youths, parents whose children participate in the program simultaneously attend a 10 week parenting program sponsored by "Parent Project" while their teens attend classes on the juvenile justice system, as well as counseling classes on sexually transmitted diseases, drug education classes, culminating with a visit to a mortuary.
"The parental component of our program gives these parents the tools and resources they need in order to effect a change in their parenting style" says Program Director Sergeant Toni Calton. "This in turn allows parents to adapt and better supervise their strong-willed child."
With the assistance of the Friends of Industry Sheriff's Station (FOISS) and Industry Station Youth Activities League (both dedicated 501c3 nonprofit organizations) The "Solutions" program aims to demonstrate to at-risk teens that poor life choices lead to a destructive lifestyle, and there are alternatives to joining gangs, committing crimes, and using drugs and alcohol.
"Solutions" is open and free to all families with children in grades six through nine who feel they can benefit from the course.
