IRS Pervasive Telephone Scam Information
The Saddle River Police Department is fielding an increasing number of complaints in regards to phone calls where the caller claims to be with the IRS. The caller will use many tactics to convince the recipient they owe the IRS money. They may make repeated calls from different numbers and use a different name and title each time. They may identify themselves as a law enforcement officer with a warrant or threaten the recipient with arrest if they do not follow the instructions on how to satisfy the fraudulent debt.
Under NO circumstances should the call recipient make any arrangements to settle the fraudulent debt. This is a well-documented telephone scam acknowledged by the IRS with information posted on their web site http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam
If you are suspicious of a scam of this nature get as much descriptive information as possible without making your personal information available to the caller. It is highly recommended you follow the instructions on the IRS web site on how to report the matter to federal authorities. You may also contact the Saddle River Police Department so the matter can be officially documented.
